Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about pool renovations, resurfacing and interior finishes on the Gold Coast.
Renovations & repairs
What's the difference between a pool renovation and resurfacing?
Resurfacing replaces the pool's interior finish — the surface you actually touch and see. It's the right job when the shell is sound but the finish has faded, gone rough, or started to fail.
A renovation goes further. It takes in repairs to the shell itself, plus the surrounds — coping, tiling, waterline — as well as the interior. If your pool has structural cracks or the edges are dated, you're looking at a renovation rather than a resurface.
We'll tell you honestly which one your pool needs when we quote. There's no benefit to us selling you a renovation if a resurface will do.
How do I know if my pool needs resurfacing?
The common signs are:
- Colour has faded or gone patchy
- The surface feels rough or abrasive underfoot
- Cracks, or hollow-sounding spots in the finish
- Rust staining coming through from below
- Algae you can't stay on top of, no matter the chemicals
- Chemical and maintenance costs creeping up
That last one catches people out. A deteriorating surface goes porous, which gives algae somewhere to take hold and quietly pushes your running costs up long before the pool looks obviously bad.
Can a cracked, rusty or algae-affected pool be saved?
Usually, yes. Age deterioration, cracks, rust and persistent algae are all things we deal with regularly, and they're rarely the end of a pool.
The important part is that repairs happen properly before any new finish goes on. We don't use short-term patch solutions — we work with polymer-enhanced, cement-based materials that stand the test of time. Covering up a problem just means paying to do the job twice.
Do you work on commercial pools as well as residential?
Both. We've worked across residential pools and commercial complexes alike, and both come with warranties. Jeff has also been involved in large-scale projects internationally — England, Tahiti, Malaysia, Dubai and Tunisia among them.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — Platypus Pools is fully licensed and insured, and has been operating for over 25 years. Jeff also spent five years in health and safety advising within the pool industry, which matters on commercial sites where owners and project managers need that box properly ticked.
Interior finishes
What pool interior finishes do you offer?
Four main interior finishes:
- Pebblecrete — a classic, hard-wearing pebble finish with an endless range of colours, pebble sizes and shapes
- Glasscrete — glass beads for a sparkling effect underwater
- Quartzon — a smooth, bright quartz-based finish
- Blue Glass Pebble — a deep blue designer finish
Alongside those we work with natural stone coping, and ceramic and glass mosaic tiles. Colours run from light greens through to deep blues.
What is Quartzon and who is it right for?
Quartzon is a quartz-based interior finish — smooth, bright, and vivid in colour. It suits residential pools, hotels and resorts, and it's a strong choice if your existing surface has faded or lost its colour.
It's fade-resistant, durable, and consistently rich in colour. It's also cost-effective, which is why most owners choose it over tiling or painting.
What is Pebblecrete?
Pebblecrete is a pebble-based interior finish that gives a pool a tough, natural look. It's aesthetic, versatile and durable, and comes in a wide range of colours, pebble sizes and shapes.
It's the classic Australian pool finish, and it's hard to beat for longevity.
Can you match a particular colour or look?
Generally, yes. Between the four interior finishes, the colour options within each, and the natural stone, ceramic and glass mosaic tiles we use for coping and waterlines, there's a lot of scope. Tell us the look you're after and we'll work to it.
Quotes, timing & warranty
How much does a pool renovation or resurface cost?
It depends on the size of the pool, the finish you choose, and what condition the shell is in — which is why we quote on site rather than over the phone.
Quotes are free and carry no obligation. Call Jeff on 0413 479 688 and he'll come and look at it.
How long does a pool renovation take?
It varies with the scope of the work and the finish. We'll give you a realistic timeframe with your quote, and keep you informed as the job progresses.
What warranty do you offer?
Our work is warrantied for both residential and commercial clients, and we guarantee the longevity and durability of the finish. We'll confirm the specifics in writing with your quote.
How long will a new pool interior last?
A quality finish, properly applied over properly prepared surfaces, lasts many years. Preparation is the part that decides it — which is why we don't cut corners there, and why we avoid short-term products that look fine on day one and fail early.
Do you charge for quotes?
No. Quotes are free and there's no obligation attached. We'll come to you, look at the pool, and tell you what it actually needs.
What areas do you service?
We work across the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Northern New South Wales — including Ashmore, Broadbeach Waters, Burleigh, Coomera, Mermaid Waters, Nerang, Ormeau, Mudgeeraba, Byron Bay, Ballina, Kingscliff, Pottsville and Tweed Heads.
If you're not sure whether you're in range, call and ask.
